Vitamin B12 Shot

What is B12 Vitamin Shot

Vitamin B-12 shots are injections that can be prescribed to treat a vitamin B-12 deficiency.

A deficiency in this essential nutrient can lead to an array of health problems, ranging from fatigue to permanent neurological changes.
Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in many functions in the body, including: DNA synthesis, Energy production, Nerve cell health, Red blood cell formation and Neurological function.

B-12 is present in many food sources (mainly animal-based), where it is bound to the protein molecules in that food. Vitamin B-12 is separated from the protein during digestion and is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Adequate stomach acid is required to release the vitamin from the protein, and a substance called intrinsic factor is necessary to ensure its absorption.

People who are unable to absorb vitamin B-12 properly may have pernicious anemia, which is a type of anemia characterized by a lack of intrinsic factor.

Benefits :

Vitamin B12 injections can aid your body in regulating your sleep, mood and appetite cycles and give you a boost of energy that lasts.

Delivered intramuscularly the Vitamin B12 injection bypasses the digestive system for immediate effects that leave you feeling reenergized.

Frequently Asked Questiosn

What happens during the treatment?
B12 is administered via a small injection into the muscle of the upper arm. Taking only a couple of minutes.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are generally non-existent or mild. On occasion, you may experience some discomfort, bruising, redness, mild diarrhoea, itching, inflammation, or tenderness at or around the site of injection that could last from a few minutes to several days. Less frequent side effects may include lightheadedness, nausea, fatigue, headache, dizziness, warmth or flushing. True allergic reaction is extremely rare. However, if you experience throat swelling, a pruritic (itchy) body rash, dangerously low blood pressure (that may result in lightheadedness, fainting or feeling weak), or symptoms associated with anaphylaxis (throat swelling, trouble breathing) following administration of any injection, please visit your nearest emergency department.
Who can benefit from getting a shot?
Everyone can certainly benefit from receiving a shot with vitamin B12. People who are most at risk of being B12 insufficient or deficient are vegans + vegetarians, older adults, individuals with atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia, gastrointestinal disorders, those who have had gastrointestinal surgery + people who take certain medications including, but not limited to, estrogen (HRT), H2 receptor antagonists (such as Tagamet®, Pepcid® + Zantac®), PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors such as Prilosec® or Prevacid®), Chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin®) + Metformin.
When will I start seeing results?
You should start to notice a difference after a week, but can take up to 3 weeks to feel full effect.
I'm not vegan, why would I need a B12 shot?
B12 deficiency isn't just a problem for vegans; many people develop a B12 deficiency regardless of their diet—it has more to do with lack of absorption rather than lack of intake.
The Framingham Offspring study found that 39% of the general population may be in the low normal + deficient B12 blood level range. There was no significant difference between those who ate meat + those who did not. New research shows that eating animal products causes animal sugars, such as Neu5Gc, to become attached to cells that line our hollow organs, like the stomach, causing the body to make antibodies against these sugars resulting in chronic inflammation and, therefore, impaired B12 absorption. Everyone needs vitamin B12 + the best way to supplement B12 is by intramuscular (IM) injection.
