What is semi-permanent eyeliner and lip make-up?

Semi-permanent eyeliner and lip blush treatment at Jhoveth Lee-Overy Aesthetic Clinic, Market Drayton

Just like semi-permanent brows, eyeliner and lip treatments implant pharmaceutical-grade pigment into the upper layers of the skin — shallow enough to soften naturally over 2–3 years, deep enough to stay put through swimming, gym sessions and emotional films. For eyes, styles range from a whisper-fine classic line to a smudged "stardust" effect, a top-and-bottom classic or latino liner; for lips, lip blush builds soft all-over colour while lip liner defines the border.

Sessions take 80–175 minutes depending on your style, with topical numbing throughout. A 4–6 week top-up perfects the result, and annual colour boosts keep everything fresh. Because the pigment is placed so superficially, the look stays soft and natural — enhancement, not a harsh tattoo line.

Is it right for you?

Good for you if

  • You are allergic to conventional eye make-up or rub your eyes
  • You wear glasses or struggle to apply liner steadily
  • You train, swim or live in your makeup and want it to stay
  • You want fuller-looking lips without filler
  • You want subtle, everyday definition you do not have to draw

Not suitable if

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Any active eye infection, stye or conjunctivitis
  • Lip treatment with an active cold sore — precautions below
  • Recent isotretinoin use or blood-thinning medication — tell us at consultation
  • Keloid scarring history or uncontrolled diabetes

If you have ever had a cold sore, tell us at consultation — antiviral precautions are required around lip treatments. A patch test is always completed at least 48 hours before any treatment.

Benefits of semi-permanent eyeliner and lips

  • Eyeliner that never smudges, flakes or washes off
  • Fuller-looking lips without filler
  • Perfect for glasses-wearers and sports
  • Results last 2–3 years
  • Styles from whisper-fine to defined
  • One less ten minutes at the mirror every morning

How is it done?

A fine, sterile, single-use needle configuration implants pigment along the lash line or into the lip tissue. For eyeliner, a lash-line enhancement sits between the lashes for subtle definition, while classic, latino and stardust styles build thicker, smokier or softly blended lines. For lips, pigment is layered across the lip body (blush) or the border (liner) to build a colour that reads as your own, just better.

Numbing cream is applied before and refreshed during the session, so the sensation is scratching and vibration rather than sharp pain — though eyes will understandably water and lips swell a little afterwards. Colour always looks darker and more intense in the first week, then lightens by roughly a third as healing finishes.

What to expect, step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation and patch test

We choose your style and colour together, take your medical history (including cold-sore history for lips) and complete your patch test at least 48 hours before treatment.

  2. 2

    Design

On treatment day, we draw your liner or map your lip shape so you can approve it in the mirror before any pigment is implanted.

  3. 3

    Treatment

Numbing, then pigment implantation — 80–175 minutes depending on style. Eyes water; lips swell a little. All completely normal.

  4. 4

    Days 1–7

Colour looks darker and bolder than the final result. Fine flaking occurs — do not pick. Follow the written aftercare precisely.

  5. 5

    Weeks 2–4

True healed colour settles as flaking finishes — softer and more natural than day one. Lips may feel slightly dry for a couple of weeks.

  6. 6

    4–6 week top-up

We perfect the line, even out any patchiness and lock in longevity. Annual colour boosts keep it fresh after that.

Healing and aftercare

Eyeliner: expect swollen, watery eyes for the first 24–48 hours — like you have had a good cry. Colour looks about a third darker for the first week, then fine flaking occurs around days 3–7. Healed at roughly four weeks. Avoid contact lenses for the first few days, keep the area clean and dry, and no eye makeup until flaking finishes.

Lips: swelling for 2–3 days and a dry, chapped feeling as colour settles. If you have a cold-sore history, antiviral precautions are started before treatment — this matters, because lip work can trigger a flare without it. Avoid hot, spicy, salty and acidic food and drink for the first days, keep lips clean and apply the aftercare balm provided, and SPF on lips afterwards slows colour fade. Healed at roughly four weeks.

Results, colour fade and top-ups

The finished result shows after your 4–6 week top-up, when the line or colour is evened out and perfected. Expect the healed result to be noticeably softer than day one — that is the design intention. Eyeliner typically holds 2–3 years; lip colour can fade a little faster because lips renew quickly, so annual colour boosts suit most clients.

Colour never vanishes overnight — it fades gradually, and you choose when to refresh. Styles can also be adjusted at boost time: thicker liner, more lip colour density. Full refresh sessions are priced as top-ups when within the recommended window.

Pricing and options

Pricing follows the style you choose. First appointments include design, treatment and healing review; the 4–6 week top-up (£60) perfects the result. Styles marked price on consultation are confirmed at your free consultation.

Safety, patch tests and credentials

Every treatment starts with a free consultation, full medical history and a patch test at least 48 hours beforehand. Treatment is performed by Jhoveth, an award-winning, fully qualified practitioner, using sterile single-use needles and pharmaceutical-grade pigments, with numbing throughout.

The main risks — infection, pigment reaction, or a cold-sore flare with lip work — are largely preventable: strict aftercare, patch testing and antiviral precautions where there is any cold-sore history. We treat the eye area conservatively and never begin a design you have not approved in the mirror. If semi-permanent make-up is not right for you, we will say so.
